Ann Coulter – playing for laughs

If you have an idle five minutes, and thanks to the recession it seems more and more people do each day, you should do a quick click around the right wing blogs. Some of them are downright nasty, Michelle Malkin for example stirring up her ‘riot, rifle and religion’ crowd,  some are simply insane such as the one who equated Obama and Mugabe as black African Presidents who mean harm to their own country,  and some delusional, like Glenn Beck and the his accusations about America’s descent  into fascism.

However, Ann Coulter has her tongue firmly in her cheek most of the time. She knows she is being deliberately contentious, is too bright to take what she writes too seriously, and at least has wit in addition to righteous anger in her literary armor. Her latest piece downplaying the pursuit of torture in the Bush era , while playing up the potential damage to US standing that the release of the torture memos will do, is one of her funniest for a while. She is a savage right wing hack, but you can forgive her that sin when her work is at least funny. Malkin – a women with much more sinister intent to her lifework it appears – could do well to learn from Coulter,  who has become a self-promoter par excellence and has parlayed her extreme worldview into a healthy media empire. Coulter’s  piece on torture (if considered as humor, rather than seriously political) is worthy of a read for a chuckle- MUSLIMS: ‘WE DO THAT ON FIRST DATES’ (www.anncoulter.com/)

Only three terrorists — who could have been shot — were waterboarded. This is not nearly as bad as “snowboarding,” which is known to cause massive buttocks pain and results in approximately 10 deaths per year.

Normal human beings — especially those who grew up with my older brother, Jimmy — can’t read the interrogation memos without laughing.

At Al-Jazeera, they don’t believe these interrogation memos are for real. Muslims look at them and say: THIS IS ALL THEY’RE DOING? We do that for practice. We do that to our friends.

But The New York Times is populated with people who can’t believe they live in a country where people would put a caterpillar in a terrorist’s cell.

Funny piece, but then again, she has a rather  funny view of the world.

Shame Ann Coulter is so far out… I can’t help liking her writing, though.
