I think more people would feel safer about discussing sacred cows like religion and race if they didnt have to face reprisals from opposition parties, et al. The tendency to violence has been every more apparent since last summer when eruptions ocurred at town hall meetings. It’s been down hill ever since then with the most recent of threats against legislators for how they voted on health care bill. While I agree with your premise of open and honest debate, we cannot deny the danger involved now when speaking–or voting–one’s conscience.

Even on blogs the attacks have become more virulent, and I would not want to meet in person some of those who have confronted me for my views. The civilty and respect for differences has been replaced by vague threats and name calling.

Look around the world, there are more terrorism activity in other countries too. India is safe..
